Pavement Profile Scanner (PPS)
The Pavement Profile Scanner consists of phase measurement Laser Radar (Ladar) with unparalleled precision, range, and sample rate optimized to meet the demanding requirements of pavement testing at highway speeds, combined with a rotating polygon to scan the Ladar along a line on the pavement 6 times per revolution. Rotating at 10,000 RPM the PPS scans 1,000 profiles per second or 1 every 2.5 cm at 80 K.P.H. measuring both elevation and reflectivity. With the polygon 2.1 meters high, the ±45° scan field of view produces a 4.2 meter wide profile.
Polygon orientation determines how scans occur on the pavement. Two standard installations are with the rotational axis orthogonal to the direction of travel. This produces tranverse and longitudinal scans. Scanning transversely, the PPS yields state-of-the-art measurement of rutting and ride quality, overcoming all the shortcoming of conventional rut bars. Full lane coverage capturing line marking and shoulder condition is accomplished safely with no hardware extending beyond the vehicle. Longitudnial profile accomplishes performance not attainable with inertial referenced profilers. One scanner can meet diverse requirements since it is easily repositioned for different applications.
